APFS Data Recovery After Deleting An Entire Folder

I accidentally deleted an entire folder on my Mac’s APFS drive and realized it had important files I still need. I’m trying to find the safest way to recover the deleted folder without overwriting data or making APFS data recovery harder. What should I do first?

I’d stop using the APFS drive right away. That’s the part people tend to mess up. If you keep saving files, installing apps, or even just using macOS normally, deleted data can get overwritten and your odds get worse fast.

The type of drive matters a lot here.

If this is an external HDD, or an older Mac with an APFS-formatted hard drive, recovery is usually more realistic as long as the deleted data hasn’t been overwritten yet.

If it’s an SSD, the situation is less forgiving because of TRIM. TRIM basically lets the SSD know which deleted blocks it can clear out. Once those blocks are actually erased, recovery software can’t put them back. So if the files were deleted from an APFS SSD, don’t keep using the Mac and hoping nothing happens. The longer it stays in use, the more likely TRIM or normal system activity wipes out what you’re trying to recover. On newer macOS installs, disabling TRIM for the internal SSD usually isn’t really an option, so moving quickly is about all you can do.

Before paying for or running recovery software, check the simple stuff first:

  1. Time Machine backups.
  2. Any available APFS snapshots.
  3. FileVault encryption. If the drive is encrypted, it usually needs to be unlocked or decrypted before recovery tools can scan it properly.

For the actual recovery attempt, Disk Drill worked best for me. It understands APFS instead of only doing a raw signature scan, so when the file system metadata is still there, you may get folder structure and original filenames back instead of a pile of random files.

The safer workflow is something like this:

  1. Install Disk Drill on a different drive, not the one you’re recovering from.
  2. Connect the affected APFS drive.
  3. Run a full scan.
  4. Use preview before recovering anything, so you can see whether the files look intact.
  5. Recover to another disk. Never save recovered files back onto the original drive.

The preview step is worth doing. It gives you a decent idea of whether the files are actually usable before you waste more time copying junk.

If the drive won’t mount, keeps dropping connection, or is making weird noises, I wouldn’t start running repair tools yet. Don’t run First Aid or anything else that might write changes to the disk until the important files are copied somewhere safe. Recovery first, repairs after.

If this is just accidental deletion or some file system corruption, your chances are usually much better than if the drive itself is failing.

If this was deleted from the Mac’s internal SSD and the Trash was emptied, set your expectations low before spending hours on scans. APFS plus SSD TRIM can make “deleted” mean “physically unrecoverable” pretty quickly, especially if you kept using the same macOS install afterward.

The safer move I don’t see people stress enough is to avoid experimenting on the original disk. If the drive is external and still readable, make an image of it first if you have another disk with enough free space, then scan the image. A recovery scan is usually read-only, but mistakes happen, and if the disk is starting to fail, repeated full scans can make things worse. If it’s the internal boot drive, shut it down and work from another Mac, recovery environment, or an external boot disk instead of logging back in and browsing around.

Disk Drill is fine to try if you want a user-friendly APFS-aware scan, but don’t judge recovery by the folder name alone. Preview actual files before recovering, especially photos, videos, archives, and documents. A tool may show the old folder tree because some metadata survived, while the file contents are already zeros or corrupted. And if you have Time Machine, iCloud Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, or a local APFS snapshot, check those first because restoring from a backup is cleaner than carving files out of deleted space.

Scan the Data volume, not the sealed “Macintosh HD” system volume. On newer macOS installs your files live on “Macintosh HD - Data,” and the plain “Macintosh HD” volume is mostly the read-only OS, so picking the wrong target can waste a lot of time and make the results look worse than they are. If Disk Drill gives you the option to scan the whole APFS container or physical disk, that’s usually the better choice; if it only shows volumes, choose the Data one. And don’t “recover” the folder back to Desktop just because it is convenient, since that writes right back onto the same APFS volume you’re trying not to disturb.
