I’m trying to connect a DNT Optics HYDRA-LRF to my Mac, but nothing happens when I connect it with a USB cable. Are there any proven and quick ways to connect the HYDRA-LRF to macOS? Has anyone here actually done it and can share their experience?
The USB cable probably isn’t the issue. The HYDRA-LRF shows up as an Android device, and macOS doesn’t support file transfers from it without additional software. DNT Optics confirms this in its support information and suggests using a third-party transfer app.
One option is MacDroid. I use it to move files between a Samsung phone and a MacBook, so it may also work with the HYDRA-LRF. I don’t own that scope, though, so I can’t say I’ve tested this exact setup.
The general MacDroid process is:
- Enable and activate Developer Options on the device.
- Turn on USB Debugging.
- Add the device in MacDroid and follow the instructions for its Android version.
- Select MTP or ADB as the connection mode.
- When prompted on the device, set the USB connection to File Transfer.
- Click Mount in MacDroid.
- The device storage should then appear in Finder.
MacDroid works as an Android file manager for macOS. It can mount Android and other MTP-compatible devices so their files can be browsed and transferred through Finder. Its documentation covers USB connections using MTP or ADB, along with Wi-Fi connections.
OpenMTP or another Android file-transfer utility may work too. If anyone tries one of these with the HYDRA-LRF, it would be useful to know which connection method worked and how easy it was to set up.
Expect firmware updates to be fussier than ordinary file transfers. MacDroid may mount the HYDRA-LRF, but I’d still use a Windows PC for updating unless DNT specifically confirms that its updater works on macOS, since a failed firmware flash can brick the device.
If the HYDRA-LRF charges but never appears in the Mac’s USB hardware list, that is a cable or connection problem. If it appears there but not in Finder, the USB connection is working and macOS simply is not mounting the Android-style storage.
Check Apple menu > System Settings > General > About > System Report > USB while the scope is powered on and connected. If nothing changes when you plug it in, try a known data-capable USB-C cable, connect directly instead of through a hub or dock, and test another port. Plenty of USB-C cables are intended mainly for charging, so I would not completely rule out the cable as @xturbopandax did.
If the scope shows in System Report, move on to an MTP application. MacDroid may handle it, but start with MTP mode if available. Developer Options and USB Debugging are needed for ADB, not ordinary MTP, and the HYDRA-LRF may not expose all the Android menus needed to enable ADB anyway. DNT’s current instructions specifically describe these scopes as Android devices that macOS does not mount natively.
I would push back slightly on the idea that firmware updating automatically requires Windows. The published process is basically a file transfer: download the package for the exact model, extract the outer ZIP, copy the resulting update file to the root level of the scope’s storage, eject it properly, and restart the scope. That can be done from a Mac once an MTP program sees the storage. It is not the same situation as running a Windows-only flashing utility.
The risky part is file handling. Do not rename the firmware file, put it inside another folder, or let macOS keep expanding an update file that only looks like another archive. Make sure the transfer has fully finished before ejecting. Use a charged battery, confirm that the download says HYDRA-LRF rather than another HYDRA model, and record your zeroing settings first because a firmware update may clear them.
For ordinary recordings, look for folders such as DCIM, Movies, or a manufacturer-created media folder after mounting. If MacDroid connects but a folder looks empty, quit any other MTP application before reconnecting since two transfer apps can fight over the same device. The key first test is System Report. It tells you whether you need to troubleshoot the physical USB connection or stop changing cables and concentrate on MTP software.
Don’t start by hunting for Developer Options or USB Debugging. That is the phone-oriented ADB setup, and the HYDRA-LRF only needs an MTP connection for normal file access.
The quickest USB attempt is to connect the scope directly with its USB-C data cable, turn the scope on after connecting, then open MacDroid and use MTP mode. Do not expect it to appear in Finder until MacDroid mounts it. If MacDroid never detects anything, check System Report as @xturbopandax described. That separates an MTP problem from a bad cable or port in about a minute.
If you only want photos and recordings, skip USB and try the DNT mobile app over the scope’s Wi-Fi. That is often less aggravating than making macOS cooperate with Android storage. You will still need MTP for copying a firmware file to the internal storage, but I would not switch to Windows automatically. A Mac is fine as long as the transfer completes, the file stays unchanged, and the scope is properly ejected before restarting.
Unlock the Mac before connecting the powered-on scope, then watch for an “Allow accessory to connect?” prompt. On newer Macs, dismissing or missing that prompt can leave you with a device that charges but never becomes available to an MTP program.
If no prompt appears, check System Settings under Privacy & Security for the accessory connection setting. Set it to allow accessories while the Mac is unlocked, reconnect the HYDRA-LRF, and leave the Mac unlocked during the first connection. A work-managed Mac may have this controlled by company policy, which can make troubleshooting rather confusing.
There is another expectation worth correcting: an MTP utility does not always create a normal drive on the desktop. MacDroid can mount compatible devices for Finder access, but other MTP programs may require you to transfer everything inside their own window. Seeing the scope in the transfer app, but not under Finder’s Locations section, does not necessarily mean it failed.
For the first attempt, keep the setup boring:
- Connect directly to the Mac without a dock.
- Power the HYDRA-LRF on before launching the MTP app.
- Approve any connection prompt on either device.
- Close other Android or MTP utilities.
- Keep the scope awake while copying a small recording as a test.
I would use a small media file before touching firmware. That confirms both reading and writing without risking an interrupted update package. If a short transfer works, then move the firmware file exactly as DNT specifies and verify that its size on the scope matches the downloaded file before ejecting.
@omegacoder’s System Report check is still the best dividing line. If the HYDRA-LRF never appears there, no transfer application will fix it. If it does appear, stop cycling through cables and concentrate on accessory permission and the MTP client. Also be aware that a client may detect the scope yet expose only certain storage areas. That can be enough for recordings but not necessarily enough to place an update file at the storage root.
For photos and video, Wi-Fi transfer is the path of least resistance if the mobile app gives you what you need. USB on macOS is mainly worth wrestling with when you need full storage access or must copy a firmware package.
Disk Utility is a dead end here. The HYDRA-LRF uses MTP rather than presenting itself as a normal USB drive, so macOS will not mount or repair it like an SSD. @omegacoder’s System Report check is the right first test. If the scope appears there, open a single MTP client and connect through that client, not Finder.
Be careful with firmware instructions that say “copy to the root.” That means the top level shown by the MTP client, not a folder named “root.” Some clients expose only media folders, which is fine for recordings but useless for firmware. If MacDroid or OpenMTP cannot show the storage’s top level, use another computer rather than guessing where the update file belongs.
MTP on macOS is flaky, and that’s the real issue nobody in here has named directly. Everyone keeps arguing about whether a Mac can do the firmware update. It can. The question is whether the connection stays up long enough to finish, and in my experience with Android MTP over USB on a Mac, connections drop for no obvious reason. A dropped copy of a media file costs you nothing. A dropped copy of a firmware package while the scope is writing it is a different story.
So I land somewhere between @ghost_static_beacon and the people pushing back on him. He’s right to be cautious, but wrong about the reason. It isn’t that DNT ships a Windows-only flasher. It’s that the transfer method itself is the weak link. If you have a Windows machine sitting around, use it for the flash and nothing else, purely because the MTP stack there tends to be less temperamental. If you don’t, a Mac is fine as long as you treat the copy as delicate.
The one bit of advice I’d actually lean on is @katie’s small-file test first. Copy a short recording, confirm it reads and writes cleanly, and watch whether the mount holds through the whole thing. If the connection survives a boring little transfer without dropping, your odds on the firmware file go way up. If it stutters or the device vanishes from the transfer app halfway, stop and don’t even think about firmware over that link.
MacDroid coming up earlier makes sense, and it’s probably your best shot at getting the storage root visible for the update file rather than just the media folders. I’d treat it as the tool that gets you connected, not the thing that guarantees a safe flash. The safety part is on you: verify the file size on the scope matches what you downloaded, eject properly, and don’t let the Mac quietly re-expand the archive. That last one bites people.
For plain photos and clips, honestly just use the Wi-Fi app and skip the USB circus entirely. USB is only worth the hassle when you need root storage access for firmware.
The HYDRA-LRF’s 32GB storage is built in, so the obvious “just pull the card” shortcut unfortunately doesn’t exist. Use an MTP app such as MacDroid, and if System Report cannot see the scope, no amount of software wizardry will fix a charge-only cable.
