My external hard drive suddenly stopped showing up on my Mac, but it contains important files I need to recover. It isn’t appearing in Finder, and I’m looking for safe troubleshooting or data recovery options that won’t erase the drive.
Running First Aid too early can make recovery harder if the file system is badly damaged, so avoid repairing, initializing, erasing, or reformatting the drive for now. Try a different cable, port, and power adapter first. Then open Disk Utility, choose View > Show All Devices, and check whether the physical drive appears even if its volume does not. You can also check System Information under USB or Thunderbolt to see whether the Mac detects the hardware at all.
If the drive appears in Disk Utility but will not mount, scan it with a recovery tool such as Disk Drill for Mac. Recover the files to a separate drive, never back onto the problem drive. The free scan should at least show whether recoverable files are present before you pay.
If the drive is missing from both Disk Utility and System Information after testing another cable and computer, recovery software probably cannot communicate with it. Clicking, beeping, repeated disconnects, or failure to spin up points toward a hardware issue. Stop powering it on and consider a professional recovery lab if the files are valuable.
Not showing in Finder does not automatically mean the files are gone, but repeated attempts can turn a weak drive into a dead one. If it appears intermittently or reads very slowly, prioritize making a byte-for-byte image or clone onto another drive before scanning for individual files. Run recovery software against that copy rather than stressing the original.
@quantumkernel_34 is right about holding off on First Aid. Another failure point people overlook is the external enclosure itself. The USB-to-drive controller or power supply can fail while the disk inside remains readable. Testing a compatible enclosure or dock may help, but only if the drive is removable and does not rely on hardware encryption built into its original enclosure.
If macOS detects the device consistently but the volume is missing, Disk Drill or another recovery tool may be able to scan it. If it disconnects during imaging, makes mechanical noises, or vanishes whenever data is accessed, stop there. Software cannot safely work around failing hardware, and every power cycle carries some risk.
If that volume was encrypted, either through FileVault or hardware in the enclosure, half the advice above stops applying. A recovery tool can scan the raw disk all day and only pull back scrambled blocks unless you have the password or key to unlock it first. So before anyone starts imaging or scanning, figure out whether the volume was encrypted at all. If it was, and you don’t have the key, no software on earth fixes that for you.
@binarybyte2597x already flagged the enclosure encryption trap, which is the one people get burned by most. Pulling a bare drive out and slapping it in a dock feels clever right up until it turns out the original controller was doing the encryption and the disk is now unreadable in anything else. If you don’t know for sure the drive is portable that way, leave it in its case.
The part I’d push back on slightly is the rush toward recovery software as step one. Before you scan anything, look at the drive’s SMART data if the Mac can read it. Disk Utility shows a basic verified or failing status, and a tool that reads raw SMART attributes will tell you if reallocated sectors are climbing. That single check tells you whether you’re dealing with a flaky cable and a confused file system, or a disk that’s physically dying. Those two situations need opposite responses. One you can poke at. The other you power down and hand to a lab.
On Disk Drill, it’s fine for the scan-and-preview stage the way the first reply described, and the free scan showing recoverable files before you pay is genuinely the useful bit. Just don’t treat the preview as a guarantee. Files can show up in a scan list with intact names and still come back corrupted, especially fragmented ones or anything that was mid-write when the drive dropped. Recover a few and actually open them before you trust the result.
Realistic expectation: if the drive still mounts intermittently and reads clean, you’re probably fine and this is a cable or port issue. If it’s silent, clicking, or vanishes the second you touch it, the odds shift hard toward a lab, and every extra plug-in makes it worse. Decide which camp you’re in early, because the cheap DIY route and the expensive professional route branch right at that point.
