My iPad was working fine until recently, and now apps take forever to open, typing lags, and even basic browsing feels slow. I haven’t changed anything major, so I’m trying to figure out what could be causing the sudden slowdown and how to fix it.
I went through this on two iPads, one after an iPadOS update, one out of nowhere. The weird part is how fast it goes from fine to annoying. Apps hesitate, Safari drags, keyboard pops up late. It feels random, but I usually found a reason before doing anything drastic.
If the slowdown started right after an update, I would wait a bit first. For roughly a day, sometimes less, the system is busy in the background. Indexing, cleanup, photo stuff, sync stuff. Mine often settled down after I left it plugged in overnight on Wi-Fi. If it still feels bad the next day, then I start checking things.
The first thing I look at now is storage. This gets missed a lot. Once an iPad gets close to full, performance drops in dumb ways. I noticed mine started acting rough when storage was around 80 percent used. When free space got under 1GB, it was worse. Newer iPadOS builds lean on storage for swap, so if your device has no room left, multitasking gets ugly fast.
I had one iPad freezing in Safari and stuttering when switching apps. Turned out I had years of junk sitting there. Old screen recordings, duplicate photos, giant videos I forgot to delete. I tried sorting it myself and gave up after ten minutes. I used Clever Cleaner because I wanted something fast, and it helped me clear a pile of space without much fuss.
What I liked was how direct it was. No paywall popped up on me, no ads in my face, no weird account setup. It runs on the device, which mattered to me because I do not like handing photo libraries to random servers. The Heavies section made it easy to spot huge files first. The Similars section pulled up near-duplicate shots and blurry junk I kept meaning to remove. It even broke screenshots out by file size, which was oddly useful. I cleared around 15GB and the lag eased up right after. If your iPad feels slow, making space is the first thing I’d do.
If storage looks fine, I move to the low-risk settings changes.
Background App Refresh is one. I turn it off for anything non-essential. A pile of apps checking in behind the scenes adds up. On older iPads, I also switch on Reduce Motion under Accessibility. Sounds minor. It is not. Those animations cost more than people think, and replacing them with simpler transitions made my older iPad feel less sluggish.
Then I do the boring fix people skip. Restart it. I know, obvious. Still works. A reboot clears temporary memory and stops stuck processes. I have seen random lag vanish after one clean restart, so I do not ignore it anymore.
Safari is another common mess. If the slowdown is strongest while browsing, clear its data. Go to Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data. I had one case where web pages took forever to load and tabs kept hanging. Clearing Safari fixed most of it in a minute.
The last thing I check is battery age. Older batteries do wear down, and when they cannot keep up with peak power demand, the device may throttle performance to avoid shutdowns. If your iPad is 4 or 5 years old, some of what you are seeing might be hardware age, not a bad setting or a broken app.
I still would not jump to a factory reset or replacement first. Free up storage. Cut background refresh. Reduce Motion if the iPad is older. Restart it. Clear Safari data. Those steps solved it for me more than once, and none of them took long. Hope yours snaps out of it too.
Sudden slowdowns on iPad usually come from one of three things. A bad app, a bad network path, or failing hardware. I’d check those before doing the usual cleanup stuff. @mikeappsreviewer covered storage and Safari, which are fair points, but I don’t think storage is always the main culprit unless you’re near full.
Try this in order.
- Force close one suspect app. If typing lag happens only in one app, delete it and reinstall it.
- Test the iPad on a different Wi-Fi network. Slow browsing is often DNS or router issues, not the iPad. If YouTube opens fine on cellular hotspot but not home Wi-Fi, there’s your answer.
- Open Settings, Privacy & Security, Analytics & Improvements, Analytics Data. If you see the same app name crashing over and over, that app is dragging the system down.
- Check battery and charging behavior. If the iPad gets hot doing simple stuff, or drains fast while idle, a background process is stuck.
- Turn off low power mode if it’s on. People forget this one.
- Unpair old Bluetooth stuff. I had an Apple Pencil bug once that caused weird lag when charging and typing. Dumb, but real.
If you need to free space fast, Clever Cleaner is worth a look. It’s useful for large videos, duplicate photos, and screenshot clutter. This guide for how to use Clever Cleaner to speed up your iPhone or iPad lays it out in a simple way.
If the lag started after one specific day, check Settings, General, VPN & Device Management too. Old VPN profiles and filter apps slow traffic more than people think. Seen it twice. Weird issue, easy fix.
One thing I’d add to what @mikeappsreviewer and @espritlibre said: sometimes it’s not “slow,” it’s the iPad choking on one broken system setting or accessibility feature.
A few less-mentioned things to check:
- Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Touch Accommodations. If this got enabled by accident, typing can feel weirdly delayed.
- Settings > Apple Pencil if you use one. Scribble and Pencil hover bugs have caused lag for some people.
- Mail accounts can also wreck performance. A stuck Exchange or Gmail sync can make the whole device feel off. Remove and re-add the problem account.
- Widgets on the Home Screen. Sounds silly, but I had a weather widget go rogue and spike battery + lag.
- Location Services for apps that do not need it. Constant polling = heat = slowdown.
- Keyboard dictionaries too. If lag is mostly while typing, reset Keyboard Dictionary under Transfer or Reset iPad. Annoying, but it fixed one of mine.
I slightly disagree that factory reset should always be way down the list. If the slowdown appeared suddenly, affects everything, and none of the basic fixes work, an encrypted backup + clean restore is sometimes faster than chasing ghosts for 3 hours. Bit drastic, yeah, but not crazy.
Also check Settings > General > iPad Storage and look for an app showing absurd document/data usage. If you need to clear junk fast, Clever Cleaner is decent for duplicate photos, giant videos, and screenshot clutter. This review on why Clever Cleaner is one of the best free iPhone and iPad cleaning apps explains it pretty well.
If your iPad is older, sometimes “all of a sudden” really means one background bug exposed aging hardware. Annoying, but real tbh.
