Why Is My IPhone Lagging On Every Single App Now?

My iPhone suddenly started lagging in every app, even basic ones like Messages and Safari. Apps take forever to open, scrolling stutters, and the phone feels slow after a recent update. I need help figuring out what’s causing this and how to fix the iPhone lag before it gets worse.

If you installed iOS 26 a day or two ago, I would not panic yet. I saw the same thing after a big iPhone update. The phone felt off, keyboard lagged, apps opened slow, scrolling looked choppy. For the first couple days, iOS is doing a pile of cleanup and rebuild work in the background. Photos get reindexed. App data gets sorted again. System files get shuffled around for the new version. While all of this is going on, the CPU stays busy, and the whole phone feels heavier than usual.

What helped me was simple. I left the iPhone plugged in overnight, on Wi-Fi, for two or three nights in a row. After about the third day, it felt a lot better.

If you are past a week and it still feels slow, I would stop blaming the update alone.

Storage is the first thing I would check, even if your phone does not say it is full. iOS likes breathing room. From what I have seen, you want around 10 to 20 percent of your storage free. If you dip under that, the system starts struggling with temp files, app launches get messy, and random stutters show up everywhere. I had a phone with a few GB free and thought I was safe. I was wrong. On a larger-capacity device, a few GB is nothing.

For most people, photos and videos are the mess. Mine was. Cleaning that library by hand is miserable, so I used Clever Cleaner. What I liked was how direct it was. No ads popping up, no paywall blocking basic cleanup. The Similars section grouped near-duplicate shots, so I did not have to compare five versions of the same blurry dinner pic by myself. The Heavies section sorted media by size, biggest first, which made it easy to spot the huge 4K clips and screen recordings eating space. It also showed file sizes for screenshots before deletion, which saved time. From what I could tell, it handled things on-device. After I cleared a few GB, the phone felt less sluggish. Not magic, but enough to notice.

Then I would check battery health.

Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health.

If maximum capacity is under 80 percent, iOS starts pulling performance back to avoid shutdowns. I have seen old iPhones feel half-dead because of this. In those cases, replacing the battery helped more than any setting tweak I tried.

A few other fixes, in the order I would try them:

  1. Update every app in the App Store. After a big iOS release, some apps lag because they are not caught up yet.

  2. Turn off Background App Refresh for apps you do not care about. Path is Settings > General > Background App Refresh. I trimmed mine down and the phone stayed calmer.

  3. Turn on Reduce Motion. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Motion > Reduce Motion. On older iPhones, this makes the UI feel smoother because the system is not spending energy on transition effects.

  4. Check Low Power Mode. If you keep it on all the time, that is part of the slowdown. It cuts performance to save battery. Good for emergencies, bad for daily speed.

  5. Restart the phone once a week. Yeah, boring advice. Still works. I do it when things start feeling sticky.

If a full week passes and none of this changes much, I would try Reset All Settings.

Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings.

This does not wipe your apps or photos. It resets system stuff like network settings, display preferences, and other config junk that sometimes gets messed up during a major update. I have had this fix weird lag once, and I almost skipped it because it sounded too mild. It is worth trying before anything more annoying.

I’d check one thing first. Heat.

After a big update, some iPhones run hot for days. If your phone feels warm during light use, performance drops hard. iOS slows the chip to control temp. That makes every app feel broken. Take the case off for a bit. Avoid charging while using it. See if lag gets better when the phone is cool.

I slightly disagree with @mikeappsreviewer on waiting too long. A day or two, sure. A full week with heavy lag in Messages and Safari is not normal on a healthy iPhone.

A few things I’d do that were not mentioned yet:

  1. Check Analytics.
    Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements > Analytics Data.
If you see the same panic or crash logs repeating over and over, the system is stuck on something. That points to software corruption or failing hardware.

  2. Test in one condition only.
Turn off VPN, remove any web content blockers, and disconnect from Bluetooth for an hour. Bad VPN apps and filter apps slow Safari and sometimes the whole phone. I had this happen after an iOS update. Looked like system lag, was one junk app.

  3. Free RAM the easy way.
Restart, then open only Messages and Safari. If they are smooth at first, then lag returns after opening other apps, one installed app is chewing resources.

  4. Check iPhone storage graph, not only free space.
If System Data is huge and keeps growing, backup the phone and do a clean restore. This fixes update junk better than endless setting tweaks. Annoying, yes. Effective, also yes.

  5. Watch battery temp and health together.
A weak battery plus heat = throttling city. Even at 83 to 85 percent health, some older iPhones start feeling rough after updates.

If storage is tight, Clever Cleaner is worth a look for clearing large videos, duplicates, and screenshot clutter fast. Also, this review of Clever Cleaner on Fossbytes is a decent read if you want details before installing anything, see how Fossbytes reviewed Clever Cleaner for iPhone cleanup.

If none of this changes it, I’d back up the phone and do a full restore. Kinda annoying, but it fixes a lot of post-update jank.

I’d check one thing neither @mikeappsreviewer nor @himmelsjager really pushed hard enough: accessibility and display settings can absolutely tank the feel of an iPhone after an update.

Go to:
Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size
Turn OFF things like Increase Contrast or weird filters if you enabled them by accident.

Then:
Settings > Display & Brightness
Make sure Display Zoom is on Standard, not Zoomed. Zoomed mode can make older phones feel oddly sluggish. Same with a busy wallpaper setup. Sounds dumb, but I’ve seen it.

Also check your widget stack and lock screen widgets. Too many weather, location, stocks, fitness, etc. widgets constantly refreshing can make the phone feel janky, esp on older models.

One more thing I kinda disagree on: “just wait it out” gets overused. A little slowdown after an update, sure. But if Messages is lagging badly, I start looking at either a bad app/process loop or the phone model simply struggling with the new iOS.

If your storage is cluttered, Clever Cleaner is actually useful for clearing duplicate photos, giant videos, and screenshot junk fast. If you want a better breakdown before installing it, check see why this Clever Cleaner iPhone app review calls it a truly free iOS cleaner.

Also, what iPhone model is this? That matters a lot tbh.

Two things I’d add that @himmelsjager, @sterrenkijker, and @mikeappsreviewer only touched indirectly:

  1. Check your free storage in a more practical way. If you’re under roughly 10 percent free, iPhones can get weirdly sluggish system-wide. Not just camera or Photos, literally Messages, Safari, app switching, keyboard, all of it. I slightly disagree with the “wait a few days” angle if your storage is almost full. That won’t magically improve.

  2. Look at signal-related drain. Bad cellular reception can make an iPhone feel hot and laggy because the modem keeps working overtime. Try Airplane Mode with Wi-Fi on for 20 minutes at home. If the phone suddenly feels smoother, weak cell signal is part of the problem.

One test I like:
Settings > Battery
See which app has absurd background activity in the last 24 hours. Sometimes one buggy app is the real culprit and the update just exposed it.

Also check:
Settings > Siri & Search
Turn off “Learn from this App” for junk apps you barely use. Search indexing can get noisy after updates.

If your Photos library is massive, Clever Cleaner can help trim duplicates, screenshots, and big videos fast.

Pros:

  • quick storage cleanup
  • easy for duplicate photos
  • useful for large media hunting

Cons:

  • cleanup apps won’t fix battery wear or iOS corruption
  • you still need to review deletions carefully

If lag continues after storage cleanup, delete and reinstall the worst offender apps before doing a full restore. That fixes more than people think.
